After receiving much praise from the press, this new model from Suzuki hits the spot on price, design and engineering.  The first bikes have arrived at Motorcycles R Us.

In three colours for 2024:

The yellow is the biggest conversation starter, reminiscent of the "bumble-bee" GSX-R way back in the old days.  Yes! Its been that long.

You already know the naked GSX-8S, Suzuki's parallel twin street bike.
This is very similar, running the same motor and chassis.

The fairing, Showa suspension setting and mildly lower bar position differentiates the two, plus LED blinkers on the 8R if you are narrowing it down on a quickvisual, plus further details we won't bore you with here.

First leg throw and handlebar grab you'll notice the bar position is not that much different, in fact, it's very easy to live with even for a taller rider.  This is not a GSX-R replacement; it is a street bike not supersport which makes for great buying in where you aim to use the bike nearly all of the time - on the road, probably in traffic.  On the highway, that wind, although protected by fairing and the screen, will push your body enough to take the weight of the lower handlebars. Perfect.

The GSX-8R has nice tech, for instance:

  • Suzuki Drive Mode Selector (SDMS)
  • Suzuki Clutch Assist System (SCAS)
  • Suzuki Traction Control System (STCS), 3 modes + off
  • 5 inch colour TFT LCD multifunctional instrument panel with day/night modes
  • Stacked LED headlight with LED position marker lamp
  • Compact LED tail lamp and LED license plate lamp
  • Ride by wire
  • Suzuki Low RPM Assist (helps to prevent stalling)
  • Suzuki Easy Start System (one button press to start, no clutch pull)

Powering all 3 colours is a 776cc DOHC parallel twin with a very useable 61kW and 78Nm. Considering a weight of 205kg and low slung at that, it's an excellent all round package and balance.

A comfortable saddle with a 810mm seat height allows for a long time sitting, with a natural leg reach to the ground, pegs and levers.

A 14 litre fuel capacity is the balance between expected range and not adding an abundance of weight, like some large tank bikes do, which makes sense on high-performance models due to fuel burn.

Suzuki's warranty remains at a standard two years unlimited kilometres.  If you stick to your services and parts with only authorised Suzuki dealers and service agents, Suzuki will extend that warranty by a further year, offering in total three years.  This applies to all work undertaken on the bike, even extra services in between the schedule.

A bit of flack is thrown at Suzuki these days on their company choices for model deletion, where bikes we loved are discontinued and not replaced with a new variant of the same type.  Suzuki's vision is a green one, so many of those old machines wouldn't pass euro standards or what Suzuki want to sell anymore.

We can't help but be stoked at this GSX-8R offering however, a great looking bike in three colours, with sensible tech, a great motor, typical sensational Suzuki build quality and a bike you can expect will last you longer than most.

At $14,990 ride away on launch, we think in today's market that's a brilliant price straight off the bat.
